Medical billing, explained plainly

A medical billing company that publishes its price before you call

Soft Home Global is one of three ways to buy medical billing: a dedicated seat, priced between $1,500 and $2,500 a month across 22 roles, one month minimum, no percentage of collections. The other two options and what they cost are below, sourced.

Three ways to buy medical billing

“Medical billing company” covers three arrangements that price and behave nothing alike. Knowing which one you are actually comparing is worth more than any single number on this page.

Hire in-house

The median US wage for this occupation is $51,140 a year (O*NET, citing BLS data). Wages are only 69.9% of what an employer pays once benefits are added (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation), which puts the real cost nearer $73,162 a year. You get presence and full control; you also carry the hiring cycle, the training and what happens when that one person is out.

A percentage of collections

Neolytix puts the published range at 4% to 10% of collections of everything collected, rising to 10% to 12% for complex specialties, and AdvancedMD publishes 4% to 8% of collections on its own pricing page. On $1,000,000 a year that is $40,000 to $100,000 a year. The bill rises exactly as your practice does, for work that has not changed.

A dedicated seat

One named, full-time person working your queue on US business hours, inside the system you already use. AR calling and denial work is $1,700 a month, published, whatever the practice collects. One month minimum, thirty days notice, no setup fee.

How a Soft Home Global seat works

  • One named person, dedicated to your account, not a rotating pool
  • Works your queue during United States business hours, in your time zone
  • Logs into the practice management or EHR system you already run, through a login you issue
  • A Business Associate Agreement is signed before that login is ever used
  • Fourteen to thirty days from signed agreement to a trained person working
  • One month minimum, thirty days notice to cancel, no setup fee

Security and HIPAA, stated plainly

A Business Associate Agreement is signed before anyone has a login, and every seat works under a named individual account you control and can revoke at any time. We do not claim certifications we do not hold: there is no such thing as “HIPAA certified”, and any vendor showing you one has bought a badge. What we will and will not do is written out in full, as refusals rather than adjectives, on /security/. If the offshore part is the sticking point, /is-offshore-medical-billing-safe/ is ten questions to ask any vendor, ours included.

Questions

What is a medical billing company, exactly?

A general term for anyone who works a practice’s claims and AR on its behalf. It covers three very different arrangements: a local firm charging a percentage of what it collects, a software platform you run yourself, and a dedicated person who logs into your own system and works it as an employee would. The price and the incentive are different in each, which matters more than the label.

How much does a medical billing company cost?

Published percentage rates run 4% to 10% of collections of collections (Neolytix), and 4% to 8% of collections on AdvancedMD’s own pricing page. On $1,000,000 collected a year that is $40,000 to $100,000 a year. A Soft Home Global seat is a flat $1,700 a month for AR calling and denial work, whatever the practice collects, with 22 other roles priced the same way on /pricing/.

Is a dedicated seat cheaper than hiring someone in the United States?

On the invoice, usually. The median US wage for this occupation is $51,140 a year (O*NET, citing BLS), and wages are only 69.9% of what an employer actually pays once benefits are counted (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation): the fully loaded cost of that hire is closer to $73,162. What a local hire gives you back is presence, since they can cover the front desk. A seat cannot.

Do we have to change our practice management system?

No. Nothing is bought and nothing is migrated. A named person logs into the system you already run (Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Kareo, AdvancedMD and others) through a credential you issue and control, and works your queue inside it.

How fast can a seat start?

Fourteen to thirty days from a signed agreement to a trained person working your queue, covering the Business Associate Agreement and training on your workflow and your payer mix. You are not charged for the training period.

Is the work done in the United States?

No, and we say so on the page you are reading. Seats work from Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on your business hours. The full detail, including which payer contracts sometimes restrict offshore access, is on /offshore-medical-billing/ and /is-offshore-medical-billing-safe/.
